Mission & Purpose
BURNT's mission as a group is to promote a toxic-free environment for Nashville and surrounding areas by promoting recycling, pesticide reform and citizen activism within the governmental process. This is achieved by making the community aware of conditions that endanger local water and air quality, sharing information on realistic alternatives to the use and production of environmental toxins, and promoting the recycling and reuse of manufactured goods. Edit
1. To bring in and retain new people by exposing them to our issues and methods of bringing change to our community
2. Provide decision makers access to authoritative research and experience which shows that our solutions work
3. Develop our positions based on available research
4. Show that our brand of long haul, research-based citizen action can be effective, fun, and interesting.
Method
BURNT blends research, activism, and policy change. We research the pollution source, research the regulatory decision process, develop positive solutions, and work on multiple targets: government, neighborhood, and media.
BURNT knows pollution targets neighborhoods, the poor, and minorities. BURNT works for environmental justice.
1.Our solutions are market oriented. Eliminating flagrant polluters such as the incinerator and the downtown Rendering Plant improved commercial real estate values in Nashville.
2. BURNT seeks recycling that creates profits by separating out food and yard waste to create compost and materials that can be recycled.
3. BURNT has led the four year effort to control Metro pesticide spraying - we stay the course.
